Steve Pratt Steve Pratt
Chair of Filmmaking

Steve Pratt has over twenty years industry experience with credits that include; Writer of the feature film "Under the Radar" which was Produced by Chris Brown (The Railway Man, Bait 3D, Daybreakers), theatrically distributed by Hoyts and sold internationally by LA-based Myriad Pictures; "Farm Kids" (Children's' TV series which aired on the ABC), Writer/Director "Thunderlust" (feature film that gained international festival selection), Director "Win or Lose" (feature documentary that gained national TV broadcast). He has also worked as a Director, Cinematographer and Editor on numerous TV commercials, music videos, and corporate documentaries, including work for the United Nations, government organisations, and private enterprise. Steve is passionate about teaching filmmaking and helping students build their careers, and find their own voice in film.

Brian Vining Brian Vining
Deputy Chair of Filmmaking

Brian is a Media Trainer and University lecturer with many years experience in the local video production industry as a Writer, Director, Editor, Animator and Producer of short films, corporate videos and commercials. Brian also has extensive VFX and Computer graphics experience on short films and long form animation. He has worked extensively in the computer games industry for over 5+ years as a 3D Artist, producing 3D computer graphics for computer games, notably ‘Army Men RTS’ and ‘Destroy All Humans’.

Since 2004 Brian has been employed by Universities as well as private training colleges as a Lecturer and Trainer where he has developed and delivered courses for Writing, Directing, Production Management, Video Production, Visual Effects, 3D Animation and Computer Games Production.

He has worked with advertising agencies, publishers and clients through all stages of production from script, production, shooting to final edit and sound mix. Brian also has his own video production company and is currently developing several long form animation and live action projects for Film and Television.

Patrick Ryan Patrick Ryan
Associate Chair of Screen & Media

After graduating from NYFA LA Directing class, Patrick was involved in a number of high profile projects across Asia.In 2008, he received the Master Degree in Film and Digital Images at The University of Sydney.His thesis film, Wakefield, was selected and screened in various film festivals around the world, including Cannes Film Festival, American Online Film Festival and Swansea Bay Film Festival, etc. Patrick has been teaching film production since 2010 while remaining active in the field as a graphic designer, photographer and filmmaker.

Vic Kaspar Vic Kaspar

Vic Kaspar is an award-winning Australian Sound Designer with international credits and is regarded as one of the finest in his field after three nominations at the Golden Reel Awards in Hollywood for films such as Inspector Gadget 2 and Kung Fu Hustle, and a Golden Reel win for House of Flying Daggers, beating films such as Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban, Troy and King Arthur. In August 2015 he was selected from 1,592 films from around the world to win Best Sound for the supernatural thriller The Fear of Darkness at FilmQuest in the USA.

He has also won numerous local ASSG Awards in Australia.

Vic started out in music as a composer, engineer and producer working with various artists and also in film music working on some features as well as TV series such as Skippy and Paradise Beach.

In the early 90s he built and operated a Post Production Facility on the lot at Warner Roadshow Studios to service the needs of Coote Hayes Productions which provided Queensland with a lot of US productions including Time Trax, Flipper, Tales of the South Seas, Beastmaster, The Lost World and numerous telemovies.

He has also worked as a picture editor, producer and director throughout his career and formed a production company with colleagues to develop projects.

In short, with his more than thirty years of film industry experience, Vic has a wealth of knowledge that he can pass on to the next generation of filmmakers.

Shirley Pierce Shirley Pierce
The Great Screenplays

One of the top grossing writers in Australia, Shirley has worked on films that have had a cumulative box office of over a quarter of a billion dollars. She is currently producing a slate of films ranging from family films to hard-hitting drama. In 2014, she produced the highly successful anti-bullying video Free You Be You that has become the inspiration for a multi-platform animated series. Having written for major studios in the U.S., Australia, Japan and Spain, Shirley has also developed projects for MGM, Sony Pictures, Stephen J. Cannell Productions, Fox Television, NBC and in ten years at the Walt Disney Studios, she worked on projects ranging from the holocaust drama, Misha, to the animated films Dinosaur, Home on the Range and Meet the Robinsons. John Henry, which she wrote for Disney, won international film festivals and was a finalist in its category for the Academy Awards. Her screen adaptation of the opera Aida was the source material for Elton John’s successful Broadway production. Other credits are the comedy Synch or Swim for Sanctum producer Leesa Kahn and two projects for Caravel Pictures -- a book adaptation of romantic comedy, Seducing Mr. Maclean, and teen TV drama, Kaleidoscope.

Trevor Hawkins Trevor Hawkins

With over 30 years’ experience in the film and television industry, Trevor has worked as editor on numerous documentaries, award-winning dramas, and commercials, picking up a Bronze Lion Award (Cannes) and an Australian Writers & Art Directors Award for Craft in Television & Cinema animation. Trevor has also directed and edited television commercials for major brands including KFC, 7-UP, Pizza Hut, and Colgate, to name a few.

Lured to the Gold Coast, Trevor worked as Visual Effects Supervisor on various local and overseas television and feature productions, including “Paradise Road,” “Welcome to Woop Woop,” and “Inspector Gadget 2” (which was nominated for best visual effects in a DVD premiere movie).

Trevor also directed “The Adventures of Voopa the Goolash,” a 13-part animated series, and more recently, “Balloon Barnyard,” a 26-part animated series which is to be screened on the Disney Junior channel. With such a broad and diverse experience in the industry, Trevor has a lot to offer students and future filmmakers.

Ken Twohy Ken Twohy
Director's Craft, Production Workshops, Advance Producing

Ken Twohy is a member of the Director's Guild of America. He's worked on over 100 films, including “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Ted,” “Moneyball,” “The Fighter,” “Live Free or Die Hard,” “The Longest Yard,” and “Rocky Balboa”; and hit TV shows such as “Sons of Anarchy,” “Heroes,” “Weeds,” “Las Vegas,” “The Shield,” and “Entourage.” Twohy attended college at Saint Mary's College of California, graduating with a bachelor’s in business administration and economics. While there, he founded SMC TV, St Mary's College Television Station. Twohy also studied at University of Southern California in Graduate Film Studies. He graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Masters of Fine Arts in Communication and Film. His short film “Bullhead” was sold to Landmark Theatres. He's currently completing his PhD.

Peter Kent Peter Kent
Directing Actors

Born in Australia and raised in Canada, Peter Kent’s film career began in 1990, working both in front and behind the camera from the very start. His talent for accents and natural screen performances led to his casting in many Australian and American film and television roles. He has worked for Maura Fay & Associates as an auditions reader for Australian/American co- productions. As an instructor, he worked extensively with acting students in the use of American and British accents. This work led to him being hired as an American Dialect Coach on Heath Ledger’s first American television series, “Roar” and other such productions as “Beastmaster,” “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” and Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken.”

Charles Mitchell Charles Mitchell
Producing, Film History

Charles is currently Producing a feature length supernatural thriller called THE CONTENTS and has also Produced a series of high-profile animated & live-action interstials for Walt Disney Television, each of which won international awards, with the work being screened in the US, UK, India & Japan. Recent short films Charles Produced were screened at the Brisbane International Film Festival, Flickerfest, Saint Kilda Film Festival, and his films have won awards including Tomorrow’s Cinema Award and Best Actor Award at the Brussels Festival International du Film Independent. In addition to producing drama, Charles has also Produced & Directed two one-hour documentaries broadcast on the Seven and Ten Networks and produced a children's TV pilot at the ABC which saw him attending the international film markets in Cannes.

Adam Couper Adam Couper
Scripted TV (Comedy), Writing for Television, Thesis Directing

Adam has worked in the industry for over 30 years as an actor, director, writer, musician, improviser, stand-up comedian and voice actor for video games. He was worked around Australia on stage, screen and television. As his personal highlights from his career he would choose Headwriter for the ABC political satire BackBerner, representing Australia at the Theatresports Olympics and being the voice of a talking vomit in the Nickelodeon Children’s cartoon Hot Chunks. Clearly he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

Damian Hussey Damian Hussey
Editing 1

Damian has been working as a freelance cinematographer and editor on the Gold Coast for the past five years. He has worked on numerous commercials, music videos, corporate videos, and short films. He is an experienced editor with a number of credits to his name, including two indie films. He was also the director of photography on two other features, which are due for release in 2017. He is the owner of the production company Iron Forge Picture, and is currently developing his own feature film, “Gunpowder.”
